This has some wear near the neck where my thumb has repeatedly rubbed it. It has an anodized black finish over the aluminum. The banjo is in very good condition the only wear is to the finish of the Heli-mount rim. The cover is itself inlayed with a continuation of the overall pattern and is held in place by a small magnet, so no screws are visible to interrupt the image. The truss rod (which is accessed from the peghead) is hidden by an inlayed ebony cover. His feet are firmly planted on the earth, on or next to a path. He stands underneath a sickle moon, stars, planets, meteors and rockets. The figure is playing a fretless minstrel banjo. So to, with this pattern much of the image is off of the banjo, in the viewer’s imagination. I’ve always liked the idea of the fingerboard being a small, narrow window to another reality. The pattern covers the complete fingerboard and peghead. Still I loved the project and I like a challenge so I designed an inlay pattern of a man playing his banjo in the “Moonshine”. At the time, my Hot Band was basically a Jam Band, and so the “hillbilly” connotation was not really what I was aiming for. Furthermore the Moonshine has been used on stage and on many of my recordings during the last 11 years including THE BANJO NEVER SLEEPS (with Chris Thile & Josh Williams), THE POSTHOUMOUS WORKS OF PETER DAVID QUINN BOETTCHER, A CURE FOR GRAVITY (with Tim May) KEEPING THE TRADITION (with the Hot Band) and RETURN TO BAPTIST ALLYWAY.īack when we were designing this line, Tom Nechville decided to call this model 'Moonshine'. It has been set up to play very fast and easy. This banjo has a wonderful sweet, warm and clear tone. When this banjo was designed I wanted a tunneled fifth string, radiused fingerboard, 25” scale, mahogany neck, wooden tone ring all built on Tom’s unique Heli-mount rim, this one minus the usual resonator flange. Here is the prototype Nechville Moonshine which I co-designed with Tom Nechville.
